Compass Box Peat Monster is one of the best-known peated blended malts in Scotch. Despite the aggressive name, most whisky drinkers actually find it more balanced and approachable than a full-on peat attack like Ardbeg Corryvreckan or Octomore.

The current recipe is mainly built around:

  • Caol Ila
  • Laphroaig
  • a tiny amount of Highland malt matured in custom French oak

Compass Box is unusually transparent about its blending components, which whisky enthusiasts really appreciate.

Typical tasting notes:

  • Campfire smoke and charcoal
  • Lemon citrus
  • Vanilla cream
  • Pepper and earthy peat
  • Slight coastal salinity
  • Honey BBQ sweetness

A lot of reviewers mention that:

  • it’s “smoky but smooth”
  • less medicinal than expected
  • very cohesive and easy to sip
  • a good gateway into peated whisky.
