Compass Box Peat Monster is one of the best-known peated blended malts in Scotch. Despite the aggressive name, most whisky drinkers actually find it more balanced and approachable than a full-on peat attack like Ardbeg Corryvreckan or Octomore.
The current recipe is mainly built around:
- Caol Ila
- Laphroaig
- a tiny amount of Highland malt matured in custom French oak
Compass Box is unusually transparent about its blending components, which whisky enthusiasts really appreciate.
Typical tasting notes:
- Campfire smoke and charcoal
- Lemon citrus
- Vanilla cream
- Pepper and earthy peat
- Slight coastal salinity
- Honey BBQ sweetness
A lot of reviewers mention that:
- it’s “smoky but smooth”
- less medicinal than expected
- very cohesive and easy to sip
